Researching the Concept

My Concept
My concept is showcasing the effects of the butterfly effect. After watching Travis Scott’s Butterfly Effect music video, the captivating aesthetics inspired me and lead me into the investigation of the video’s title. In simple terms, the butterfly effect is an idea that states that a small change in the present can lead to a big impact in the future. When I conducted some research regarding this, I found that this concept related closely with the idea of parallel realities. The movies I watched regarding the butterfly effect showed people going back in time or seeing different versions of themselves in different realities. After researching the concept of parallel realities, I found that there were keywords I wanted to explore in my project, these stemmed from the common themes I was finding during my research. These words are difference, change, reoccurrence and energy. The word ‘energy’ has been included because in my concept boards I have reflected the energy that is involved when switching dimensions, which is commonly shown in movies and shows through a burst of light/colour, warp and energy. This energy has been reflected in my boards through vibrant colours, imagery and abstract storytelling.
Developing Concept Boards
These were the initial concept boards I created reacting to the concept shown below. After some thought, I realised that these boards looked very digital-based and were lacking imagery so for my final concept boards I merged some of these boards and added more fabric swatches, mark-making, fabric sampling and I scanned and printed more imagery from multiple sources which is why they are more powerful.

Final Updated Concept Boards

The words in the board 'help me calm down when I move in high speed' above are derived from the lyrics from the song Butterfly Effect by Travis Scott. The words high speed reminded me of some research I had been conducting where some people believe that we are constantly going in and out of different realities, visually to me that would look like a very quick process. I've also included parallel lines in this board through imagery and mark-making to push the narrative. The image with the person alongside the imagery of butterfly wings on either side showcase that the butterfly effect is a concept that governs our worlds.

The words 'For this life I cannot change' above are also derived from Travis Scott's Butterfly Effect song which I believe links to my concept as the idea of parallel realities would be something humans would not be able to control. The repeated outline of the person in the image in front of the image of the planets shows how we are seen to be at the centre of our universe.

In the centre of the board above, it shows a repeat of the same image that has been cut in different ways to create a different image. This reflects the idea of reoccurring memories shown in shows and movies that showcase the idea of parallel realities, where they present a situation again and again that have differences between them which is what I am reflecting here.
